Château Lassus 2020
Producer:
Château Lassus. A traditionally rooted Médoc estate emphasizing continuity and ecological stewardship. Under the Paeffgen family’s ownership since 2010, the property has evolved with subtle refinements rather than drastic changes, producing a single annual cuvée that reflects its historic identity.
Region:
Bégadan, Médoc, Bordeaux, France. Located in the northern Médoc near the Gironde estuary, the region is characterized by its gravel and sandy soils and maritime climatic influence.
Grape Variety / Vinification:
Approximately 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, though exact proportions are not formally published. The wine sees élevage in French oak, with the proportion of new barrels varying by vintage. The approach in the cellar is restrained and focused on maintaining the wine’s inherent structure.
Terroir:
The estate covers twenty-four hectares of gravel and sandy soils, with vines averaging around forty years of age. It is part of a mixed-use farm that includes eighteen hectares of meadows and five hectares of forest. Portions of the land are protected under the Natura 2000 designation and the estate holds High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3 certification. This diversified landscape contributes to the vineyard’s ecological balance and long-term soil health.
Characteristics:
The 2020 Château Lassus is medium to medium-full bodied, with aromas of blackcurrant, red plum, tobacco leaf, and a hint of gravel dust. On the palate, it shows firm yet balanced tannins, moderate acidity, and a subtle integration of oak. The wine is structured and clear, favoring balance and a sense of place over overt power.
Terroir–Characteristic Connection:
The gravel and sandy soils of Bégadan moderate vine vigor and encourage a mineral-driven style. The mixed agricultural environment and environmental certifications support a holistic approach to farming, which translates into a wine that is pure and site-specific rather than heavily stylized.
Vintage Variation:
The 2020 vintage involved reduced yields and a slightly higher use of oak compared to prior years, but the overall style remains consistent. Previous vintages like 2016 (equal Merlot and Cabernet) and 2019 (more Cabernet influence) show minor shifts in emphasis rather than major stylistic changes. The 2000 vintage, noted for its equal blend and 14 months in barrel, received a two-star rating from the Guide Hachette des Vins, though more recent vintages have seen less critical spotlight.
Decanting Advice:
Decant for about one to one and a half hours to allow the wine to open up. Serve at around 60 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the structure and aromatics are well-balanced.
Drinking Window:
Ideal drinking from 2025 to 2035. While approachable with some aeration now, the wine will benefit from a few more years of cellaring to fully integrate its elements and develop secondary nuances.
Tier / Assessment:
Very Good. Château Lassus 2020 offers a clear, site-driven expression of northern Médoc fruit with structure, freshness, and typicity. It does not aim for grandeur. It achieves consistency and balance within its style. While not built for long aging or critical spotlight, it is a wine of integrity and quiet precision. It stands as a dependable representative of its appellation and class.
